At Searchmate, our members often come to us with definite ideas about the age range they
would like to date. Many people feel young for their age and worry about dating someone
of a similar age or older. Whilst the most important element of a relationship is true
compatibility, it is important to recognise the benefits of dating someone of a similar age.
Here, we ask the question, should I date someone my own age?
Shared experiences:
One of the key benefits of dating someone of a similar age is shared experiences. You are
likely to understand each other’s cultural references and have lived through the same
societal shifts and advancements. These shared experiences can create a sense of
understanding and camaraderie alongside igniting fun and interesting conversations.
Shared values, mutual respect and intimacy are the foundation of any relationship. Dating
someone your own age offers opportunities for genuine connection and companionship that
may be harder to find within age gap relationships. There can be a real sense of solidarity
when facing life’s challenges together, with a genuine understanding of what you are both
going through.
Navigating life stages together:
Having a partner who can relate to where you are at in life can be extremely reassuring and
supportive. Mutual empathy develops out of sharing similar challenges and triumphs. You
are also likely to have similar goals and aspirations. Dating someone your own age can
alleviate worries about differing maturity levels. Whilst age does not necessarily equate to
emotional intelligence, many people do gain wisdom and a sense of perspective over the
years.
An equal power dynamic:
Vast age differences within a relationship can result in vast power imbalances. A
relationship of equals encourages decisions to be made collaboratively rather than
hierarchically.
At Searchmate, we encourage our members to keep an open mind when it comes to age.
Our dating coach, Trelawney, says –“I’ll let you into a well-kept secret within dating: very
few people ever feel old. Very few people stop wanting love, adventure, and intimacy.
Don’t write people off if they are your own age or older. Most of us will feel youthful for
life!”
