Bank Holidays and being single

Well today is the start of another Bank holiday weekend and sometimes that might not be good news if you’re single.

It can seem like every other person is part of a couple and although that is of course far from true – it just sometimes feels like it on a Bank Holiday, when everyone else seems to have something organised, particularly if the weather is good too! And to cap it all – there are adverts for online dating all over the TV.

Have you tried it?

Has it worked, it can and has for many people, but if you’re cautious or want to be discreet or you’re worried about whether or not those people online are actually genuine, then maybe it might be something that gives you a nagging doubt and makes you feel uncomfortable. If so then it probably isn’t for you.

And maybe you’re right to be cautious and doubtful.

In the UK there is no requirement whatsoever for any background checks, we asked some of the biggest and best known Online Dating Agencies why that was.

One of the biggest said they were actually too busy with the number of joiners to be able to check them – not really what we expected to hear and the other ‘big name’ company didn’t actually respond to our inquiry at all, which again was very disappointing. Especially when both of these household names do make those checks in the USA, as they are legally bound to do so. But not in the UK and so frankly it doesn’t seem like any sort of priority.

So exactly who is online then?

Well it actually could be anybody, potentially someone who has been convicted of a sex offence or violence (there are over 48,000 people in the UK who have been forced to sign the Violent and Sex Offenders Register), someone who has been to prison (around 98,000 currently are), or someone who has been convicted for fraud (Online dating fraud is growing at a very rapid rate indeed). So yes, let’s be careful out there!

So is there a viable alternative?

Well yes, you’ll be pleased to hear that there is.

At Searchmate every one who joins is checked and verified, we personally inspect their passport or driving license and a utility bill and yes we ask those awkward questions too, such as ‘Have you been convicted of any offences in the past?’ and we get to know our client base thoroughly before we begin the matching process.
